Is CyberGhost VPN Actually Private?

CyberGhost markets itself as the “Best VPN Service for Privacy” – an audited no-logs policy, Romania jurisdiction, a kill switch, AES-256 encryption. We read the privacy policy line by line, checked the pricing page's fine print, and went through 151 real user reviews to see whether the privacy pitch holds up.

✓ The verdict, up front

CyberGhost's privacy fundamentals are real, not just homepage copy: a no-logs policy that has been independently inspected by Deloitte, a Romanian jurisdiction outside the major surveillance-sharing alliances, AES-256 encryption, an automatic kill switch and DNS/IP leak protection are all documented in the company's own privacy policy – not just marketing claims. Where the picture gets more complicated is the business side: the headline “82% off, €2.19/month” price only applies to the first 26 months of a plan billed upfront, and autorenews at nearly double that monthly-equivalent rate afterward.

The 151 real reviews we pulled from Trustpilot, Google Play, the App Store and the Chrome Web Store average 2.7 out of 5, with recurring complaints about billing surprises and inconsistent connections alongside genuine praise for ease of use and the no-logs promise. Neither undercuts the privacy engineering – but it's exactly the kind of detail an independent review should surface rather than bury.

What CyberGhost Actually Says About Privacy

Claims taken directly from CyberGhost's privacy policy and features pages, not paraphrased marketing.

No-Logs Policy

CyberGhost states it does not log browsing history, IP address, connection timestamps, session duration, DNS queries or bandwidth used.

Deloitte-Audited

CyberGhost invited Deloitte to independently inspect its servers and management systems and verify the no-logs claim.

Romania Jurisdiction

CyberGhost S.R.L. is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania – outside the major intelligence-sharing alliances, with no mandatory data-retention law.

AES-256 Encryption

Traffic is encrypted with AES 256-bit, the same standard used by banks and governments, across the WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols.

Automatic Kill Switch

If the VPN connection drops, the kill switch blocks internet traffic so your real IP is never exposed by accident.

Split Tunneling & Dedicated IP

Choose which apps use the VPN tunnel, or add a Dedicated IP to cut down on CAPTCHAs and verification checks.

What Real Users Say

Pulled directly from Trustpilot, Google Play, the Apple App Store and the Chrome Web Store. We prioritized quotes that mention privacy, no-logs, trust, jurisdiction, the kill switch or encryption – but we didn't filter out the critical ones.

⚠️Read the fine print on the price

The homepage advertises “82% off” and €2.19/month – but that rate only applies to the first 26 months of a plan billed €56.94 upfront. After that, the plan autorenews at €56.94 annually, which works out to roughly €4.75/month – more than double the advertised headline rate. Set a calendar reminder if you don't want to pay the renewal price by default.

We also noticed the homepage's testimonial module is labeled “See All Positive Reviews” and the site discloses elsewhere that it “sometimes pay[s] expert sites to refer customers.” Worth keeping in mind when weighing on-site testimonials against the independent review sample below.

cyberghostvpn.com/buy pricing table: 1 Month 11.99€/mo, 2 Years + 2 Months 2.19€/mo billed 56.94€ then 56.94€ annually, 6 Months 6.99€/mo
The checkout page behind the €2.19 headline. 1 Month: €11.99/mo, autorenews at €11.99 monthly, 14-day guarantee. “2 Years + 2 Months”: €2.19/mo, billed €56.94 for the first 2 years – then, in the fine print, autorenews at €56.94 annually (≈€4.75/mo, more than double the headline rate), 45-day guarantee. 6 Months: €6.99/mo, autorenews at €41.94 every 6 months. Questions people ask

Short answers, based on our own captures and the data on this site.

Is CyberGhost fast enough for streaming?

In our test it kept about 66% of a 295 Mbps line on the nearest European server, and BBC iPlayer played while connected. See the speed and streaming pages for the captures.

Does CyberGhost leak my real IP?

Not in our DNS and WebRTC captures. We did not test the kill switch or IPv6, so treat that as one data point, not a guarantee.
